Why 8 Point Tiers?
Our weighted scoring is designed to minimize ties and reward well-rounded Oscar knowledge.
Thousands of Unique Scores
With 8 distinct point values across 24 categories, the system produces over 3,500 possible score combinations — compared to roughly 300 if every category were worth the same amount.
That means even in a party of 100 guests, ties are extremely unlikely.
Every Pick Matters Differently
Because point values are spread across 8 tiers using values that are mostly coprime (they don't share common factors), swapping one correct pick for another almost always changes your total.
Getting Best Picture right (12 pts) can't be replicated by any combination of Short Film picks (2 pts each).
Prestige Reflects Reality
The tiers mirror how the Academy itself treats categories. Best Picture and the acting/directing races are the marquee awards — they're worth more. Technical categories and shorts still count, but they won't single-handedly decide the leaderboard.
The Math Behind It
The point values {2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12} were chosen because they produce the highest number of distinct score totals for 24 categories while keeping numbers intuitive.
No category is worth less than 2 points, so every pick still feels meaningful — even the shorts.
